  • Solong Coffee

    solong coffee 01

This is the most popular coffee shop in Banda Aceh, as Bill Clinton has been here twice after tsunami.
Has known as the origin of 'Kopi Ulee Kareeng', the real name of the cafe is 'Jasa Ayah'. Ulee Kareng is the area where seven roads crossed at one junction, which one leads to the airport.

solong coffee 02Since too many plagiators acclaimed the 'Kopi Ulee Kareng' trademark, they change the brand to Solong Coffee,  after the name of coffeeshop owner.

solong coffee 03 Available to holds 200 customers, this coffeshop open from 07.00 am - 09.00 pm. Hardly to catch any conversation here unless you speaking out loud. Very crowded.

You may buy the raw coffee powder for IDR 90,000/kg at the cashier, but trust me, you need the 'chief of coffee mixer' to get the same taste exactly as if you drink there.

solong coffee 04Rumor said Starbuck already tried to buy the secret of coffee making, but the owner dismissed the million dollars offer from the biggest world coffeshop francise.

  • Feel Like Picard

    Already pulsed the title. Ha.

earl grey teaIf you have read my blogring list, you know that I have listed in Star Trek World blogring. Yes, I am a Trekkist. I join Indonesia Star Trek Fans Community with nickname: halfklingon.
Can't wait for the next Star Trek movie or Star Trek spin off. Collecting Star Trek trading cards, comics, dvds, etc. And yes, mon capitan est Jean-Luc Picard. Because of him, I love drinking Earl Grey Tea.

hermes loungeFYI, even my blog's title is reflecting about coffee shop, but my kind of drink is tea. Black tea, green tea, red tea, white tea, Camomile tea, Oolong tea, tea with sugar, sugar free tea, tea with milk, ice tea, lemon tea, warm tea, hot tea. My favorite: ice tea. I take one or two cups of coffee every day, but I drink ice tea everytime. On the hottest July or in the middle of the night whilst thunderstorm, I always drink ice tea. With one exception: if there is no Earl Grey tea.

So, yesterday whilst sitting at the lobby of Hermes Hotel, I ordered Earl Grey tea. Real Earl Grey tea, not from a replicator.
Room temperature getting cooler by air conditioner. Antonio Song sang by a female singer, soft but clear from the soundsytem. I do not know her name is, but hers sounds better than original version by Michael Frank.

"Should check on amazon.com," I heard me thinking.

earl grey tea and cigaretteWith my legs crossed like Picard always did. With my right hand holds the tea cup, I imagined that I am captain of a starship.

With bariton voice, I will give order: "Engage!"

Then, we boldly go to the place that no one ever gone before.

    Pyongyang?

  • Nasi Uduk Lamongan

pecellele Last night I have picked up from airport by my wife and my daughter, as usual. My plane landed late for almost two hours, so it was almost midnight when we entered Banda Aceh. Unfortunately, half of town darked because of electricity black out, and my place also dark, too.

I had not taking dinner, yet. So, we went to a place called Nasi Uduk Lamongan at Keraton, near Governor's official residence. nasi uduk lamonganNasi uduk is rice steamed with coconut milk, and Lamongan is a small town in East Java. Rice steamed with coconut milk or vegetable oil is a regular cook in Asia, with a small varian in flavorish spices. So, you will find nasi uduk, nasi gurih, nasi briyani, nasi lemak, nasi kuning, nasi minyak, etc.

But that's not what I ate last night.

Me and my wife ordered pecelele with regular steamed rice. preparing pecelelePecelele is fried catfish served with tomato chilli. It tasted delicious when you take it while still hot, and would be hotter because of red chilli. And here, the price is the cheapest among pecelele cuisiners in Banda Aceh.

When we still lived in Java, we eat pecelele almost everynight. With limited budget, me and my wife enjoy one portion of pecelele for two.....
Eating pecelele last night had brought back our sweet memories.

  • Trip to Medan

satay and fried riceTwo days in Medan and just returned last night.

Almost bored to death. But my high school mate, Dedi, took me to Jalan Pandu, Medan Kota for dinner. So, I ordered 'nasi goreng mata sapi' (fried rice with sunny egg) and 'sate padang' (beef sliced 'n barbeque with spicy sauce). Aaaargh! I was sooooo hungry and forget to take a picture of them! So, here the picture AFTER I have finished. Ha. Ha.

jalan pandu medanPlaced in an alley and opened after the sun goes down to after midnight, foodsellers offer local cuisine like satay and nasi goreng. For drinks you can order fruit juices, coffee or tea, hot or cool. Many places like this in Indonesia. You will looooove the atmosphere, the street singers with acoustic guitar, and the spark of fire from stoves. Dedi (a guitar player, actually) borrowed a guitar from a street singer and played it for old time shake.

So, I return to my hotel, a three stars hotel named 'Semarak Hotel' at Jl. Sisingamaraja (I think standard room rate about Rp 300,000), and slept with full stomach. Maybe snored. This is my second stays.

Next morning, I took a plate of nasi goreng with mata sapi for my free breakfast. What a redundant!
But for my surprise, it's taste not likes other hotels nasi goreng, which are have a 'standard' recipe. So delicious and I was sure that I enjoyed it not because I was starving.

After waiting and waiting for someone from the office to-pick-me-but-noone-came, I took a 'becak' (motorbikecab), and went to the Medan branch office at jalan Adam Malik. My trip here to discuss a project that I should handle. But then I found the project has been canceled.

foot message parlor behind this buildingFor killing time I took a foot massage (reflexy technic) from a massage parlor behind the office building. Whoa.... pain with pleasure! My feeling got better after this therapy.

Sunddenly it's raining. It's makes me worry. Usually, if there is hard rain, the airport's runway will flooded by water, and the flight will be delay for until it's dry. I went to the airport on 6.00 pm.

Even outside of the airport covered with water, the runway was okay for landing or take off. So, after waiting for ninety minutes, I was leaving on a jetplane to my homeland.

If you understand Bahasa Indonesia, I have a unique experience whilst waiting at the departure waiting room.

And here is the photo album of my short journey.....
